This tour is a brilliant way to discover the beauty and history of KwaZulu Natal. From Rorke’s Drift, site of the Great Zulu war, to the nature reserve of Fugitives’ Drift and vibrant, multicultural Durban.
Day 01 Meet and greet at King Shaka International Airport, Durban, and assist with car hire. Drive to Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse for 2 nights on Half Board.
Days 2-3 Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse is a gourmet getaway tucked deep into the KwaZulu Natal’s Drakensberg Mountains surrounded by the Giants Castle Nature Reserve. Beautifully situated on the edge of a trout-filled dam, alongside the Little Mooi River, the soaring mountains rise majestically from the bottom of the garden. Individually decorated, the eleven rooms at Cleopatra are fast becoming world-renowned for the innovative and creative décor. Each room has a theme and is filled with many articles pertaining to the colour scheme and theme. Menus change daily and local, imported and homegrown ingredients are used at their peak and a stroll through the vegetable and herb gardens will attest to this.
Wake up to the quiet of the country with the mountain mist rising silently knowing there is an unusual and exciting breakfast awaiting you. Walking, hiking, cycling, swimming in mountain streams, trout fishing, bird watching, horse riding and excursions to local bushman paintings are just some of the activities enjoyed on the farm and in the area. Days 4-6 Drive to Fugitives’ Drift Lodge, a 5000-acre Natural Heritage Site, overlooking both Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift and includes the site where Lieutenants Melvill and Coghill lost their lives attempting to save the Queen’s Colour of their regiment. If one tried to dream up geography and topography for the clash between two great nations, one could hardly come up with a more fantastic scene than this one. It was here that David and Nicky Rattray pioneered Heritage Tourism in South Africa and created an award-winning lodge for visitors to savour this extraordinary saga. The Lodge has spacious and luxurious en-suite cottages which all have private verandahs and broad views over the plains flanking the Buffalo River Gorge. The Lodge has a swimming pool set in the colourful, well-established gardens which are home to innumerable bird species. Whilst here enjoy half day tours of the famous Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift battlefields.
Days 7 -9 Today drive to the renowned Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga, Durban. Day 10 Return car hire to King Shaka International Airport then take your return flight home or extend your trip.
