  • The spectacular Volcanoes National Park and its magnificent mountain gorillas

Day 1: Arrive into Kigali where you’ll be assisted with immigration formalities before being escorted to your driver for the short drive to the Kigali Serena Hotel, the best property in the cit. Spend the rest of the afternoon settling into your new surroundings.

Day 2: After breakfast, your expert local guide will meet you for a guided visit of Kigali, dubbed one of Africa’s cleanest and most progressive cities. You will have a vehicle and driver at your disposal as you visit the genocide memorial museum, have lunch at the Mille Collines (of ‘Hotel Rwanda’ fame), and visit some of the city’s emerging art galleries and local markets. During your time in Kigali we can also arrange for you to meet prominent figures such as local entrepreneurs or a leading human rights lawyer if desired to give you a deeper insight into Rwanda’s past, present and future.

Day 3: Meet your driver this morning for the journey to the airport, where you’ll board a helicopter for the spectacular flight to Magashi (approx. 45 mins), located in the Akagera National Park. Your luggage will be transferred separately by road. Settle into your tent with uninterrupted views over Lake Rwanyakazinga, and perhaps enjoy your first game drive this afternoon, before enjoying sundowners and dinner at the camp.

Day 4: Rise early for your first sunrise game drive in the park. You will have a shared guide, vehicle and driver at your disposal. Akagera comprises some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa and is home to one of Africa’s highest hippo densities, some very large crocodiles as well as more than 520 bird species. Return to the camp and spend some time relaxing before heading out again with your guide. Teeming with plains game, Akagera now also boasts a healthy population of lion, black rhino, zebra, giraffe, elephant, spotted hyena and leopard. After an exhilarating day of game viewing, spend the evening relaxing at the camp.

Day 5:  This morning you might like to explore some of the park’s diverse landscapes: head out on a swamp cruiser, try your hand at catch and release fishing or head out for a game walk to gain a totally different perspective on the bush. The rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish – head out on one final game drive or even embark upon on an adventurous night safari with your expert local guide.

Day 6: This morning your helicopter will be waiting to spirit you across the country to the spectacular Volcanoes National Park, located in the northwest of the country – about one hour’s flying time. You’ll be met on arrival and taken to your new home, the Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, part of the Governors’ Camp stable of impressive properties. Once again your luggage will be transferred by road. Spend the rest of the day enjoying your first taste of Volcanoes National Park. Famed for its population of Mountain Gorillas, the park has so much more to offer, from visiting local villages and markets to hiking or biking amidst the verdant forested slopes.

Day 7: This morning track the beautiful Golden Monkey in the forests surrounding Sabyinyo. The species is endemic to the high altitude forests of the Volcanoes National Park area. The monkeys are playful and inquisitive and often spend their time leaping from bamboo branches or frolicking on the forest floor. You will depart the Park’s Kinigi Headquarters and trek through the forest, where you’ll have about an hour to spend with the animals before heading back to the lodge. Spend the afternoon at your leisure, relaxing or discovering more of what the Park has to offer, perhaps even scaling one of the nearby volcanic peaks before dinner at the lodge.

Day 8: Today marks the culmination of your visit to this wonderful country, and is sure to be an experience that will live long in the memory.  Track and spend time with one of the 20 families of Mountain Gorilla living on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes. The Gorilla treks depart from the Park Headquarters at around 07:30, and prior to departure you will be given a briefing by park staff, assigned a gorilla family to visit and rangers to guide you. The treks normally start in the cultivated land on the base of the volcanoes and leads up into the beautiful dense misty forests, lasting 2-5 hours. Once there you will get to spend about an hour in the presence of these magical creatures. Return to the lodge to reflect on this incredible encounter and enjoy your last evening in Rwanda.

Day 9: After a leisurely morning your driver will be on hand to take you and your luggage on the two hour journey back to Kigali, enabling you to take in the lush landscapes one final time. Arrive at Kigali International Airport where you’ll be assisted with check-in formalities for your flight home.
