Discover Cape Weligama

Where trade winds carried legendary explorers like Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta and Fa-Hsien past Sri Lanka’s soaring southern cliffs on some of history’s most celebrated nautical journeys, Cape Weligama has become the most celebrated resort along this fabled island’s palm-fringed shores. Thirty minutes east of Galle, Cape Weligama inhabits 12 manicured acres atop a singular promontory rising 40 metres above the Indian Ocean. Stunning panoramas await you, naturally complementing the 39 private retreats designed by one of Asia’s most celebrated architects, Lek Bunnag. The hotel’s dining venues capture Weligama’s iconic sunsets, as does the 60-meter crescent-shaped infinity pool that appears to flow seamlessly into the shimmering sea, while those timeless breezes ensure elegant swells unfurl onto the sun-kissed sand.

Tour of “Virgin White Tea” Factory

Explore a low-altitude tea plantation that is famed for “Virgin White Teas” – teas so pure they are never touched by hand. The walking tour proceeds through the tea field and enlightens guests on the noble heritage of white tea, the art of plucking and proceeds to a tour of the antiquated factory. White Tea is famous and have retailed for over US$1,500/kg, and stocks the shelves of tip-top tea gourmands Mariage Frères in Paris.

Halfway through the tour is a refreshing cup of tea with cake. Handunugoda Estate was founded by third-generation planter and author Herman Gunarathne, this tea estate is unique in that is one of the closest to the ocean.

Faces of the Galle Fort

The walk focuses on the host’s experience of growing up in the Fort and presenting it not as a tourist attraction, but an extension of his “home” – a home filled with, history, heritage, cultural integration and soul. Through his eyes and narrative, explore the layers of social fabric of a multi-ethnic melting pot of why Galle Fort is significant to world heritage. Your host may bump into other locals who make up the tapestry of personalities that gives the “living” Fort its vibrancy and character. Visit historic points of interests, like ancient churches, mosques and museums, walk the Fort’s ramparts at sunset, and explore the cobblestone streets. Walk the nooks and crannies of the commercial tourist routes and soak up the vibe of one of the most unique places in the world.

 

Host: Atheeq Ifthikar is a resident of the Galle Fort and as is typical with most residents, comprises of diverse ethnic and religious background. He is a direct descendant of one of the first gem merchants of the Fort–Sri Lankan gems were a key draw (along with spices) for merchants and tourists during the Fort’s glory days. His passions include photography and digital content, food and travel

Stand-up Paddle Boarding

Weligama Bay

This activity offers a fun way to play on the water with the added benefit of a full-body workout. You will be guided through the entire activity by one of our staff. Our SUPs are inflatable boards of 9 and 10 feet long. The boards are manufactured from layers of PVC plastic with woven fibres connecting to the top and bottom inside the board and rigid once inflated. The Stand-up board is less rigid than a hardboard. SUPs are a little lighter than many solid boards because they are composed mostly of air.

Suitable for non-swimmers wearing a life jacket.

Weligama Backwaters Exploration

Start at a serene lake in the interior of a rural, scenic village of Weligama. Use a combination of canoes, kayaks and Stand Up Paddle (SUP) boards to explore the balmy waterways of Southern Sri Lanka and the serene rural lifestyle, plantations and mangroves that run along these streams and lakes.

Sea Kayaking Experience

For an exhilarating morning out on the water, try our Sea Kayaking experience! Paddle along the bay in one of our specially designed sea kayaks in the company of a Borderlands guide. By the end of it, you would have perfected the art of rolling by staying in your boat after tipping over and use your paddle and your body to flip yourself upright! We offer two types of kayaks; Single kayaks are enclosed and use a spray skirt to keep the water out and the tandem kayaks are “Sit on Top” style which many find easier to paddle. Either way, you’re in for a lot of fun!

Kayaking is a fun and easy sport to learn and you can achieve a high level of finesse. By taking a guided trip you are not only safe but also learning all the secrets of this bay.

Snorkelling (With Guide)

The reef in front of Borderlands Activity centre offers quality snorkelling during season (December-April).

Guests are treated to manytypes of coral, fish, and the occasional turtle.

Best of  (On Bicycles and Kayaks)

A trio of biking, river kayaking and sea kayaking — our best effort to help you burn off Cape’s decadent meals! Guests will be guided for the entire activity and be shown all the main places of interest within each activity. The tour will start from the Centre and ride through the town of Weligama, exploring the life of the local villagers, paddy fields, temples, spices on bicycles. Then we reach a beautiful lake. At this point, guests will get on to their kayaks and through scenic, lush, inland waterways until reaching the sea (at a safe point).

Next, guests will paddle across Weligama Bay enjoying the scenery of the coastline. For the duration of this venture, you will see a fascinating variety of tropical flora and fauna and a lot of what southern Sri Lanka has to offer.

Beginner Diver Course – Bubblemaker Pool

Children who are at least 8 years old can use scuba gear to breathe underwater and swim around in shallow water (in our swimming pool). Something they will remember all their life! Kids must be comfortable in the water, but no prior experience is necessary. Parental approval is required. Bubble makers get a chance to:

Take their first breaths underwater in water shallower than 2 meters/6 feet.

You learn the basic safety guidelines and skills needed to dive under the direct supervision of a PADI Professional. You’ll make one or two open water dive(s), and will practice a few more skills in shallow water to prepare for your adventure. Get ready to:

Go over the scuba equipment you use to dive and how easy it is to move around underwater with your gear.

Find out what it’s like to breathe underwater. Learn key skills.

Have fun swimming around and exploring.

Hear about becoming a certified diver through the PADI Open Water Diver course.

Scuba Diving – Open Water

The journey to be able to see the magical world beneath the surface starts here. Get your scuba diving certification with the PADI® Open Water Diver course–the world’s most popular and widely recognized scuba course. No prior experience with scuba diving is required, you only need to be in reasonable health. The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three main phases:

Knowledge Development (in our classroom and/or online) to understand the basic principles of scuba diving

Confined Water Dives (in our swimming pool) to learn basic scuba skills

4 Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore!

A certification card will be issued if all the requirements have been met. This Open Water Dive certification provides you with the opportunity to go fun diving worldwide at a maximum depth of 18m/60 feet (12m/40 feet for a Junior Open Water Diver)

 

Scuba Diving–Open Water

All you need is your PADI Open Water Diver certification to start this advanced course. The course helps build confidence and expand your scuba skills through different Adventure Dives. You try out different specialities while gaining experience under the supervision of your PADI Instructor. You log dives and develop capabilities as you find new ways to have fun scuba diving. You’ll plan your learning path with your instructor by choosing from a long list of Adventure Dives. There are two required dives –Deep and Underwater Navigation –and you choose the other three, for a total of five dives. During the Deep Adventure Dive, you learn how to plan dives to deal with the physiological effects and challenges of deeper scuba diving. The Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive refines your compass navigation skills and helps you better navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time.

The other knowledge and skills you get vary with your interest and the adventures you have–night dive, photography, buoyancy control, fish identification, exploring wrecks and many more.

Minimum age 15 years old

A certification card will be issued if all the requirements have been met. This Advanced Open Water Diver certification allows you to go fun diving all around the world at a maximum depth of 30m/100 feet.

 

Wreck Dives

 

Sri Lanka’s long heritage of being at the crossroads of international trade, colonial rule, and a WWII nerve centre of the British Fleet’s influence of Asia means we have a large collection of wrecks on the seabed around the island! Join our qualified team of Dive Instructors and Dive Masters and explore these wrecks.

Duration: Full day excursion

Yoga Class

The Yoga class is Traditional Hatha Yoga done by our experienced Yoga teacher. It’s adaptable to the needs of the individual and can include dynamic and static Asana (yoga poses) and Pranayama (breathing exercises). The class is gentle and mindfulness-based, it will focus on building the awareness of the connection between body-breath-mind.

Personalised Yoga and Meditation

This class is for anyone who wants to explore what meditation is and how to use the practice in day to day

and relax (Pranayama) and meditation (witnessing attitude).

Cape HIIT Bootcamp

Fun, energizing and mood-uplifting workout in the format of High-intensity interval training; the most efficient training

technique in which you give all-out through quick intense bursts of exercise, followed by short or sometimes active

recovery periods. You will be challenged to use battle ropes, sandbags, TRX, kettlebells and learn dynamic body-weight exercises.

Fit Kids Bootcamp

This entertaining outdoor fitness activity for kids consists of warming up to music, agility drills, balance,

stability, coordination exercises, light resistance, interval training in a circuit, brain-muscle connection games and cool-down stretching. All movements are taught safely and effectively under the supervision of a professional instructor.

POP Pilates

This innovative, Pilates-inspired program presents a fusion of ab-sculpting, total-body-defining moves choreographed to everyone’s favourite Top 40 hits. The intense, mat-based workout is for people of all ages and fitness levels— challenging you to flow from one exercise to the next while developing a solid core and lean, strong muscles in the process. POP Pilates is a safe, efficient and compelling workout that focuses on low impact total body conditioning. It works to increase muscular strength, energy levels, toned physique, flexibility and mobility as well as support stability of the joints and spine.

Posality

Posality is a new word that comes from the combination of “Posture, Mobility and Vitality.” This class is uniquely designed by our professional trainer and includes posture correcting exercises and mobility drills that will help you to adjust any postural distortions by learning how to maintain the natural lumbar curve in your lower back, how to open up tight chests and improve thoracic spine and hip mobility. For the vitality part of this workout, you will perform variations of power breathing exercises to hyper-oxygenate your brain and muscles. Performing Posality sequence first thing in the morning is a great way to align your spine, turn your entire body on and get you primed for productivity and energy all day long.

ACSM and “Russian Bodybuilding & Fitness Academy” certified trainer will conduct a one-on-one personalised workout

resistance and free weights. You will learn proper exercise techniques and receive advice on a day-to-day fitness

regimen and healthy nutritional habits.
