You hear the waves crashing, the call of the peacock as you sit up in bed and are greeted by a breathtaking vista: a fabulous sunrise over the azure Indian Ocean, the scrub jungle by the famous Crocodile Rock and estuary, an eagle flying overhead. You realise that you are not dreaming of paradise, but experiencing it.

Kudakalliya is the ideal beach getaway; it’s away from the main Arugam Bay stretch and is quite deserted – sparsely populated enough that you can go for long strolls along its golden beaches and, on occasion, bump into no one barring a couple of local fisherman.

Arugam Bay’s main surf points are just a walk or tuk-tuk ride away. For those wanting a bit more excitement, the main Ulla Bay (famous for its Full Moon Parties) is just a 5 minute drive away!

Kudakalliya is ideally located, within close proximity to wildlife sanctuaries such as Lahugala National Park, and Yala East National Park and Kumana Bird Sanctuary.

It gets better still…this area is surrounded by some fantastic archeological sites…and being off the beaten track means you can cherish the beauty of ancient monuments dating back as far as 2 AD in absolute isolation…

Amenities

Location and transfer

Kudakalliya is in an idyllic location on an isolated beach just 5km south of Arugam Bay, with the river and mangrove island at the back of the property. This place is perfect for the avid nature lover, ardent surfer or those just wanting to sun bathe, relax and let time stand still.

Accommodation

Kudakalliya is set amidst a 3 1/2 acre property with the Indian Ocean in front and a tributary of the Hada Oya (river) running along the rear. These two thoughtfully designed bungalows have been built with utmost care, to optimise the views and maintain absolute privacy so that two separate groups can stay simultaneously.

KUDAKALLIYA – SAYURA

This two-story beach abode commands fabulous views of the Indian Ocean, and the estuary with scrub jungle and rock outcrops as its backdrop.  The bungalow is built in as much of an eco-friendly manner as possible, with driftwood floors upstairs, walls painted in termite mud and polished cement floors downstairs. Water is drawn from the well, and solar panels are used to supplement the electricity from the mains.

There are two rooms on the upper floor (one with an attached bathroom), and four single beds on the upper deck. Bamboo tats can be rolled down to cover the sides during the rains, though at most times keep them rolled up and let the sea breeze greet you! The second bedroom and those on the sleeping deck share a separate WC, and an open-to-sky shower area.

The main bungalow has a large balcony that’s perfect for sunbathing in absolute privacy during the day, and enjoying chilled wine and star-gazing at night.

There is also a 60-foot watchtower from which you can experience a picture-perfect sunset whilst enjoying a sundowner. During the dry months from April-September you could watch elephants frolicking in the river beyond, and feeding on the mangrove island.

KUDAKALLIYA – GANGA ADDARA

This bungalow is a new addition and was completed at the beginning of 2011. Built with the same ethos in mind, this bungalow by the edge of the river is the epitome of serenity. The dining area is on the ground floor veranda which literally ends by the bank of the river. The mangrove island is directly across the water – meaning you can enjoy your meal whilst watching elephants bathe in the river!

This bungalow has been built ideally as a family cabana, with a room on each floor including en-suite bathrooms. It is also ideal for a romantic getaway! The view from the open-air showers cannot be beaten.

The upper-floor bedroom opens up to a very large balcony with spectacular views of the flowing river, estuary, turquoise sea and lime green paddy fields. Wake up in the morning to the calls of numerous birds in the mangrove islands and end your day looking at a starry sky with the sounds of crickets and waves lulling you to sleep.
